Do you know the roots of Haddon Township?

by Michael Radie

Haddon Township is a township in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The area that is now Haddon Township was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. The land was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. The first European settlers were English and Dutch farmers who established small farms in the area.

In the 18th century, the area began to be developed for industry, with gristmills and sawmills being built along the Cooper River. The area also saw an influx of Welsh and Irish immigrants who worked in these industrial jobs.

In the late 19th century, the town began to grow rapidly as a suburb of Philadelphia. The population of Haddon Township increased from around 2,500 in 1870 to over 20,000 by 1910. This rapid growth was fueled by the expansion of the railroad, which made it easy for residents to commute to Philadelphia.

In the early 20th century, Haddon Township continued to grow and develop. The town center was developed, with new roads, businesses, and homes being built. In the 1920s and 1930s, many residents of Philadelphia and other nearby cities began moving to Haddon Township, drawn by the town's proximity to the city and its small-town charm.

Today, Haddon Township is a diverse and vibrant community with a rich history. The town's main street, Haddon Avenue, is lined with shops, restaurants, and businesses, and the town is home to a number of parks, schools, and other community amenities.

Although the industrialization and urbanization of Haddon Township happened with few different waves, now it's more known for its suburban and residential character with less focus on industrial side.
